Street Photography: Sydney

Street Photography in Sydney

Sydney – The Harbour City. The Emerald City. Doing street photography in Sydney it would be easy to fall into the trap of capturing the iconic emblems. Sydney Harbour. Sydney Harbour Bridge. Sydney Opera House. But that would be too easy. A city is more than its buildings. More than its icons. A city is its people. Its streets. Its life on the streets. I have done street photography in Paris, Hong Kong and Delhi but I’ve rarely thought to look at my own city through the lens. Until now.

“There is no logic that can be superimposed on the city; people make it, and it is to them, not buildings, that we must fit our plans.”
― Jane Jacobs

“What strange phenomena we find in a great city, all we need do is stroll about with our eyes open. Life swarms with innocent monsters.”
― Charles Baudelaire

“There’s something about arriving in new cities, wandering empty streets with no destination. I will never lose the love for the arriving, but I’m born to leave.”
― Charlotte Eriksson

“This was how it was with travel: one city gives you gifts, another robs you. One gives you the heart’s affections, the other destroys your soul. Cities and countries are as alive, as feeling, as fickle and uncertain as people. Their degrees of love and devotion are as varying as with any human relation. Just as one is good, another is bad.”
― Roman Payne

“By its nature, the metropolis provides what otherwise could be given only by traveling; namely, the strange.”
― Jane Jacobs

A city always contains more than any inhabitant can know, and a great city always makes the unknown and the possible spurs to the imagination.”
― Rebecca Solnit

“To be far from the madding crowd is to be mad indeed.”
― A.E. Coppard

“The city blew the windows of my brain wide open. But being in a place so bright, fast and brilliant made you vertiginous with possibility: it didn’t necessarily help you grasp those possibilities.”
― Hanif Kureishi

“Cities have the capability to at any moment shift out of the familiar, even if you’ve lived in one all your life.”
― Kate Milford

“You take delight not in a city’s seven or seventy wonders, but in the answer it gives to a question of yours.”
― Italo Calvino

“There are more hidden spaces in a city, more hidden lives and hidden emptinesses, and more darkened windows where shadow people pass fleetingly in and out of sight.”
― Kate Milford

“Are you a lucky little lady in the City of Light? Or just another lost angel… City of Night? ”
― Jim Morrison
